Increasing Smallholder Productivity Through Guaranteed Demand

The Grow Africa Secretariat has published three case studies into effective modes of engaging with smallholders from Danish development consultancy, Dalberg. The case studies explore different models of creating a virtuous circle of guaranteed demand that can be collateralised to finance the productivity increases that lead to stable supply.

  • The Patient Procurement Platform, developed by the United Nations World Food Program and supported by Grow Africa, aims to aggregate demand from a consortium of buyers over 3-5 years. The case study looks at the opportunities and risks for stakeholders in the platform.
  • Yaanovel, a joint venture between agricultural investor Intervalle and the District of Yaoussoukro in Côte d’Ivoire, is increasing farmer productivity by guaranteeing off-take of rice from a group of smallholder farmers, allowing them to collectively lease machinery. Yaanovel also provides access to seeds and fertilizers, thereby enabling farmers to increase their productivity.
  • CB Farm Fresh, a nut producer in Mozambique, is investing in training smallholders, using guaranteed offtake to improve yields and ensured stable supply.
